Donald Trump loves a deal. Or at least, he loves talking about one. Recently, he took to the microphone to trash his predecessors, claiming Barack Obama and Joe Biden blew “hundreds of millions” on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He promised he could fix the iconic, leaky landmark for a cool $1.5 million. It sounds great. It is also completely wrong.
Let’s look at the ledger. Obama did spend money. His administration dropped about $34 million on a massive, two-year overhaul that wrapped up in 2012. Biden? He did basically nothing. No major overhauls. Just some routine annual scrubbing to keep the algae from taking over. So where did the “hundreds of millions” figure come from? Thin air.
Meanwhile, Trump’s own bargain-bin pricing is a fantasy. He claims he’s coating the 2,000-foot basin in “American flag blue” rubber for peanuts. But federal spending records show a different reality. Uncle Sam has already handed out at least $14.8 million in contracts for this quick-fix job. That is nearly ten times Trump’s public estimate. Math is hard. Politics is harder.
The pool has always been a headache. Built in the 1920s on swampy, dredged Potomac River mud, the structure naturally wants to sink. It leaks. It stagnates. It is the very spot where Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of equality, but today it mostly dreams of functioning plumbing. Obama’s team tried to fix the sinking issue by making it shallower, adding a filtration system, and tinting the bottom gray. It still leaked. Algae still bloomed.
Under Biden, the National Park Service looked at a full rehabilitation. The price tag came back at over $100 million. They balked. They shelved the project. Instead, they just cleaned it.
Enter Trump’s quick-fix philosophy. He scrapped a proposed $301 million granite replacement. Instead, he ordered workers to sandblast, pebble-blast, and slap down “sophisticated” rubber. He bragged about hauling away ten dumpsters of trash. White House flacks are spinning this as a triumph of patriotic thrift. They claim Trump is saving the pool for America’s 250th birthday while his predecessors squandered cash.
But the Interior Department isn’t denying the ballooning costs. When pressed on why the actual contracts dwarf Trump’s $1.5 million boast, they blamed the rush. Speed costs money. More workers, longer hours, and rushed materials to meet the anniversary deadline have driven the price tag up. The pool might end up blue, but the taxpayers are the ones getting bruised.
