The Twins need arms. Any arms, apparently. Minnesota just signed Austin Voth to a minor league deal, hoping the 33-year-old righty has something left in the tank. He doesn’t cost much. He has experience. That is about the extent of the selling point here.
Voth recently walked away from the Toronto Blue Jays, choosing free agency over a demotion. Can you blame Toronto for wanting him out of sight? In nine brief, agonizing innings north of the border, Voth served up eight hits and three home runs. That adds up to a bloated 9.00 ERA. It is a tiny sample size, sure, but those nine innings were incredibly loud.
Still, the Twins are desperate. Their rotation is hurting with Bailey Ober and Mick Abel sidelined on the injured list, forcing the front office to scramble for coverage. Following a chaotic 2025 trade deadline, the bullpen remains a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces. Voth brings 366.1 big-league innings to the table. He is not a savior. He is a shield to protect overworked arms.
Over at Triple-A, Voth instantly becomes the only starter with actual major league dirt on his spikes. Expect him to surface in Minneapolis sooner rather than later. When the dog days of summer hit and the bullpen is gasping for air, a veteran who can eat innings—even if some of those pitches land in the bleachers—is worth a roll of the dice.
