Frankie Dettori is lucky to be breathing. The 55-year-old jockey icon ended up in a heap of twisted metal on Wednesday night near Newmarket, his car flipped and spun after another vehicle slammed into his rear passenger side. Now, he’s sitting in a hospital bed with a shattered thumb and a cage of broken ribs. It could have been worse. Much worse.
His handlers at H Talent Management confirmed the wreck, which apparently went down right on the Cambridgeshire border. They’re calling it an “accident,” the usual corporate speak for a terrifying highway spinout. Dettori is currently stuck under hospital observation, waiting on doctors to finish poking and prodding him with scans to make sure nothing else is broken inside. He sent out the standard PR thank-you to the paramedics and doctors keeping him glued together, followed immediately by the inevitable plea for everyone to back off and give him some damn privacy.
This mess throws a massive wrench into his planned UK comeback. Dettori hasn’t touched a stirrup in Britain since his October 2023 victory on King of Steel at Ascot, having taken his talents across the pond. He was supposed to make a grand, nostalgic return this September at Doncaster for the Leger Legends race. Now? He’ll be lucky if he can sneeze without screaming. For now, the saddle will have to wait.
