Most people go fishing to escape the drama. Todd and Elvia Malcolm ended up driving right into the middle of a life-or-death chase.
It started simply enough. The Lincoln, Maine couple was cruising through Telos Township, heading toward their favorite fishing hole. Then, they spotted a cow moose. She was pacing the tree line, visibly agitated, grunting into the brush. Todd told his wife to grab her phone for a quick photo.
Then, chaos erupted.
Out of the thicket burst a tiny moose calf. Right on its heels was a massive black bear, closing the gap fast. It wasn’t a slow hunt. It was a sprint. Todd knew the kid didn’t stand a chance. Nature is brutal, but he wasn’t about to sit there and watch a slaughter on his day off.
He hit the gas.
He didn’t want to hit the predator. He just wanted to block the lane. Todd gunned the engine, throwing the heavy truck directly into the path of the oncoming chase. It worked. Startled by the sudden roar of horsepower and steel, the bear veered off. It vanished into the woods. Just like that, the hunt was over.
Elvia was terrified but relieved. Her heart was pounding. She didn’t want to watch a baby get torn apart through her windshield. Looking up the road, she saw the payoff: mother and calf, reunited and safe.
Only after the adrenaline faded did Elvia check her phone. She expected blurry shots of dashboard dust. Instead, she captured crystal-clear action photos of the wild pursuit. She took them all from the safety of the cab. She wasn’t crazy enough to step outside.
With the drama behind them, the couple finally made it to the water. The fish were biting. They caught some brook trout, a quiet end to a very loud morning.
