Another day, another claim of territorial conquest from the Kremlin. On Friday, Russia’s military brass handed Vladimir Putin what they are calling a major win: the capture of Kostiantynivka. It is a key eastern Ukrainian stronghold that Moscow has been eyeing for years.
Putin soaked in the news at a command post. He called it a massive strategic victory. But he also used the moment to demand his generals push further. He wants wider security zones. Why? Because Ukrainian long-range strikes are hammering Russian oil refineries.
Kyiv stayed silent. No confirmation. No denial. Just the usual grim silence that follows these claims.
General Valery Gerasimov delivered the news. He is the chief of Russia’s General Staff, overseeing a war now dragging into its fifth bloody year. Gerasimov boasted that his southern forces are pushing hard to take the entire Donetsk region. He labeled Kostiantynivka a major defensive hub.
To back up the claim, the Russian Defence Ministry flooded Telegram with images. They showed soldiers waving Russian flags next to ruined buildings.
Gerasimov is already looking at the next target. He told Putin that Russian troops are closing in on Lyman, a logistics hub about 70 kilometers to the north.
But it is not all smooth sailing for Moscow. Yevgeny Nikiforov, commander of Russia’s northern forces, admitted to Putin that they still cannot stop Ukrainian drones. These cheap UAVs keep hitting Russian oil depots, causing real fuel shortages. Putin’s solution is simple. He wants to seize more Ukrainian land to create a buffer zone.
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskiy insists Russia’s eastern push has slowed to a crawl. Putin dismissed this as mere propaganda.
Peace remains a distant fantasy. U.S.-brokered talks are frozen due to the conflict in Iran. Still, both sides are reportedly waiting on a visit from American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Do not hold your breath.
