Gary Harris is coming home. Well, back to Michigan, at least. In a Tuesday night trade that feels like a classic front-office shuffle, the former Michigan State standout was shipped to the Detroit Pistons. He isn’t traveling alone. Taurean Prince is tagging along, while the Pistons sent Caris LeVert—a former Michigan Wolverine, ironically enough—and two second-round draft picks back to the Milwaukee Bucks.
Harris has been around the block. Drafted 19th overall by Chicago back in 2014, he was immediately flipped to Denver and has spent a decade carving out a living as a reliable, if sometimes fragile, 3-and-D wing. He can shoot. He used to defend. Now, he joins a Detroit squad that fell just one game short of the Eastern Conference Finals last season. Whether he actually plays a single minute in a Pistons uniform or gets flipped again before the ink dries is anyone’s guess. That’s just the business.
For Detroit, the math is simple. They shed LeVert’s contract, grab some perimeter shooting, and suddenly have the financial breathing room to chase bigger fish this summer. It’s a gamble. We’ll see if it pays off.
