A seasonal train conductor in Tennessee learned the hard way that mixing personal politics with customer service is a quick ticket to the unemployment line.
Jack Peterson, a part-time employee on Chattanooga’s historic Incline Railway, was sacked on Independence Day. His offense? Hijacking the train’s PA system to deliver an unsolicited lecture on American exceptionalism.
A passenger captured the moment on TikTok. In the video, Peterson can be heard addressing the crowd: “To the very, very few Americans in here, happy Independence Day. To the rest of you, welcome to the greatest country on the face of the planet, and if you disagree, you can leave.”
At least one passenger yelled back, telling him to shut up.
The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA), which runs the 131-year-old railway, did not find the stunt amusing. They fired Peterson the same day.
Scott Wilson, CARTA’s chief of staff, issued a swift apology. He called the remarks rude and exclusionary. According to Wilson, the conductor’s actual job is simple: seat people safely and play a pre-recorded history tape. It is not a soapbox. Wilson noted that Peterson violated basic conduct rules requiring employees to be courteous.
Peterson, however, is playing the martyr. He claims his firing was unjust and questioned what the country has come to when a man gets fired on the Fourth of July for being patriotic. He has already launched a GoFundMe campaign to cash in on the outrage.
In a bizarre twist, CARTA’s CEO is reportedly planning to meet with Peterson to discuss a potential path back to employment.
Meanwhile, Nathan Scherer, the passenger who filmed the encounter, expressed some regret. He wanted management to address the uncomfortable comments aimed at perceived foreigners, but he did not expect Peterson to lose his livelihood. Scherer said he hopes the conductor gets his job back, adding that the country should welcome everyone.
