On Saturday, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse dropped a bomb of a whistleblower report detailing how the Kennedy Center was allegedly butchered in a mad dash to please Donald Trump. According to the Rhode Island Democrat, the Government Accountability Project handed over a damning dossier. The allegations? The arts complex cut every corner imaginable. Why? To satisfy “the President’s aesthetic whims” and prep the venue for a series of televised ego trips back in December.
What did we get for this rush? Rusting steel columns covered in cheap paint. A brand-new reflecting pool that might need to be completely demolished and rebuilt. Even a freshly laid bathroom floor was ripped out simply because someone hated the tile color. Whitehouse didn’t hold back, calling the debacle a waste of public funds that treated a national memorial like a cheap private condo flip. The Kennedy Center, predictably, kept its mouth shut when asked for comment.
This is just the latest chapter in Trump’s obsession with the venue. After seizing control of the John F. Kennedy tribute at the start of his second term, Trump purged the old leadership, installed a loyal Board of Trustees, made himself chairman, and slapped his own name on the facade. Naturally, lawsuits followed. A federal judge eventually ordered Trump’s name removed, but not before artists boycotted the place in droves. Trump even tried to shut the whole operation down for two years, but the courts blocked him, ruling that only Congress has the power to shutter the memorial.
Now, the bills are coming due. Whitehouse fired off a demand letter to the center’s executive director, Matt Floca, demanding explanations by July 23. The senator isn’t bluffing. He backed his demands with an 83-page appendix stuffed with internal emails, photos of shoddy craftsmanship, and firsthand accounts from former project managers.
The details are embarrassing. The report claims the center jumped the gun on construction before Congress even authorized the work, all because they wanted the venue pristine for Trump to accept a newly minted FIFA Peace Prize. To make the deadline, they allegedly bypassed federal contracting rules. They handed out lucrative, no-bid contracts, including an $8 million deal to replace the concert hall floor. The kicker? The company hired had absolutely zero experience working on concert halls. Just another day in the capital.
