Indian cricket rarely rewards the aged. Yet, at 33, Madhya Pradesh off-spinner Saransh Jain is finally getting his passport stamped for national duty. He has been named in the 15-man Test squad heading to Sri Lanka this August. It is a classic case of being the right man in the right place when disaster strikes someone else.
Washington Sundar’s hamstring snapped during the England ODIs. Bad luck for him. Golden ticket for Jain. The veteran spinner had already made his case during an India A tour of Sri Lanka, smashing an unbeaten 70 and grabbing six wickets in a four-day match. He forced their hand.
His domestic record is solid, if unspectacular. In 54 first-class matches, he has scraped together 2,223 runs at an average of 31.75 and taken 188 wickets at 27.30. Last season was his peak. He bagged 30 wickets in just seven Ranji Trophy games. Good numbers. Not earth-shattering, but enough to get noticed when the selectors are desperate.
The rest of the squad is a familiar circus. Ravindra Jadeja is back after nursing a tennis elbow. Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan are in, assuming their bodies don’t break down before boarding. Nitish Kumar Reddy is stuck at the Centre of Excellence. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill’s captaincy is under the microscope after a humiliating home season that saw India get swept 0-2 by South Africa, including a historic 408-run thrashing in Guwahati.
Will Jain actually play? Don’t bet on it. The spin hierarchy is locked down. Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Manav Suthar aren’t stepping aside for a 33-year-old rookie. Jain’s only hope is his batting. Gautam Gambhir loves a long tail that can hit. If Sundar stays broken, Jain might squeeze in. Otherwise, he is just a tourist with a front-row seat.
The two-Test series kicks off in Galle on August 15, 2026, before moving to Colombo on August 23. It is a short trip. For Jain, it might be his only one.
