The American far-left is already eating itself over 2028. The Democratic Socialists of America, a 120,000-member club trying to play realpolitik, is currently locked in a bitter internal feud. The fight is simple: do they back Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for president right now, or do they wait?
Some want to strike while the iron is hot. The “Groundwork” faction wanted an immediate, nationwide member poll to crown AOC. They argue that waiting until the summer 2027 convention leaves them in the dust. If she runs, the movement moves with or without the DSA’s official blessing.
Instead, the bureaucrats won. The National Political Committee killed the poll idea in a tight 14-13 vote. The decision kicked the endorsement process back to the standard 2027 convention timeline.
The rank-and-file are furious. Activists took to social media to accuse leadership of stealing their votes and suppressing democracy. NYC chapter co-chair Gustavo Gordillo blasted the committee for disenfranchising members while his chapter sends millions in dues to national headquarters. Others warned this puts the organization on a “dangerous path” of irrelevance.
Of course, AOC hasn’t even said she is running. She might challenge Chuck Schumer for his Senate seat instead. Even if she does run for the White House, her relationship with the DSA is complicated. The national group previously yanked its endorsement of her over her votes on Israel’s Iron Dome funding.
Meanwhile, conservative watchdogs are sounding the alarm. A spokesperson for Canary Mission warned that an AOC presidency would hand radical activists the keys to the executive branch, calling the prospect a major national security threat. For now, though, the socialists are too busy fighting each other to worry about taking over the government.
