Tattoos used to mean something. Now, they’re just party favors. Industry veterans are sounding the alarm over “bottomless tattoo” sessions, warning that these all-you-can-ink deals are cheapening a historic craft. Meanwhile, laser removal clinics are cleaning up the mess.
It’s a simple, stupid gimmick. Pay a flat fee, get a block of time, and let an artist needle as many tiny doodles onto your skin as possible before the clock runs out. Chantale Coady-McCombs, who runs Picture House Tattoo Studio in Chippenham, has seen the fallout firsthand. Her shop is increasingly flooded with clients begging to fix or cover up these rushed, low-rent micro-tattoos.
“It’s encouraging irresponsibility,” says Tanya Buxton, owner of Paradise Tattoo Studio in Cheltenham. She’s not wrong. Tattooing isn’t a bottomless brunch. Yet, social media feeds on TikTok and Instagram are flooded with ads offering three-hour ink binges for a measly £150. Buxton points the finger at permanent makeup artists trying to pivot into fine-line tattooing to chase quick cash. It drags the whole industry down. Suddenly, everyone expects master-level work for pocket change. “It’s not like an all-you-can-eat buffet,” Buxton warns.
Peer pressure plays a massive role. Coady-McCombs notes that many clients succumb to group mentality during these sessions, only to wake up with deep regrets. They didn’t want to be the party pooper. Now, they’re stuck with body art that resembles a bored teenager’s blue-pen scribble. It’s not just ugly. It actively damages their mental health.
Regret is booming. Wayne Joyce, who has spent nearly two decades running The Reset Room in Bristol, is seeing a massive spike in people wanting these micro-tattoos gone. There is a dangerous myth floating around. People think light, tiny tattoos are a breeze to erase. While it’s true that less saturated ink is easier for a laser to shatter so the body can metabolize it, the casual attitude is staggering. Joyce says clients now routinely ask for the price of a tattoo and the cost of its removal in the exact same breath. It is madness.
