Tech giants are building massive, power-hungry server farms everywhere. Brockovich launched a new initiative: Brockovich AI Data Center Reporting. It’s a watchdog site mapping the digital sprawl. So far, she’s logged nearly 4,000 complaints across almost every state. People are pissed.
She isn’t trying to kill the internet. She just wants honesty. Good luck with that. Tech firms love shadows. The biggest complaint she hears isn’t about the hum of cooling fans or the massive water draw. It is secrecy. Pure and simple.
Take Holly Ridge, Louisiana. Meta is dropping $27 billion on a 4,000-acre monster called Hyperion. Locals like Diane Cobb found out after the ink was dry. No warning. Or look at Box Elder County, Utah. A $100 billion project backed by “Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary faced a room of angry locals. A county commissioner literally told the crowd to “grow up” before slipping into a back room to rubber-stamp the deal. Democracy in action.
Sure, the money talks. Loudoun County, Virginia, raked in $875 million in tax revenue from its 200 data centers in 2024. That pays the bills. But the ecological cost is staggering. In 2023, US data centers devoured 176 terawatt-hours of juice. That is 4.4% of the nation’s entire power grid, up from 1.9% in 2018.
Your electric bill is going up because of this. Carnegie Mellon researchers estimate an 8% average hike nationwide by 2030. If you live in Northern Virginia, expect worse. Then there is the water. These giant digital warehouses drink millions of gallons daily just to keep the servers from melting.
Brockovich wants corporations to play fair. She wants public hearings with actual facts before the bulldozers roll in. She wants politicians who answer to voters, not corporate tax dodgers. It’s a nice dream. We’ll see if she can pull off another miracle.
