John Fetterman is drawing a line in the sand. The Pennsylvania senator insists he has no immediate plans to ditch the Democratic Party, but he made one thing clear on Wednesday: if his colleagues officially abandon Israel, he is gone.
To Fetterman, this is not a policy debate. It is a matter of basic moral clarity. Speaking at the Hill Nation Summit in Washington, the hoodie-wearing lawmaker expressed sheer bewilderment at how his party could turn its back on a critical Middle Eastern ally that shares its core democratic values.
He sees the writing on the wall. The progressive base is screaming for a break from Israel, and mainstream Democrats are starting to sweat. Fetterman is watching this drift with growing dread.
Look at the votes. Look at the money. Fetterman pointed directly to a recent push by Kentucky Republican Thomas Massie to slash $3.3 billion in security aid to Israel. House Democrats split right down the middle on it. While Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries voted no, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark voted yes. For Fetterman, Clark’s vote is a symptom of a much larger disease.
Primary season is proving his point. Candidates running on explicitly anti-Israel platforms are winning. Fetterman warns that pandering to this loud, hostile wing of the electorate is a recipe for disaster.
Republicans have already approached him about crossing the aisle. He won’t dish on those private chats, but his frustration with his own side is boiling over.
Take Michigan. Progressive Abdul El-Sayed is surging in the Senate primary polls. Fetterman warns that if El-Sayed snatches the nomination, Democrats will have to burn millions of dollars just to keep the swing state competitive. Why? Because El-Sayed is defined by his hostility toward Israel.
It is 2024 all over again. Fetterman argues that Democrats are suffering from collective amnesia, resurrecting toxic slogans like “defund the police” that previously cost them the White House.
They never learn. In New York, a democratic socialist activist who once called for abolishing prisons, borders, and police—and claimed Israel does not exist—just knocked off a sitting Democratic congressman.
Then there is the absolute mess in Maine. Fetterman is furious at his colleagues, particularly Bernie Sanders, for aggressively backing Graham Platner. Platner’s campaign imploded after a woman accused him of rape, but not before he threw a critical Senate race into total chaos.
Fetterman wants heads on pikes. He wants to know why the progressive darlings who championed Platner—including Sanders and Maryland’s Chris Van Hollen—haven’t apologized to the victim.
Where is the accountability? Fetterman knows that if he had backed a candidate with that kind of baggage, he would have been crucified. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Warren is busy dodging questions, claiming it is simply time to move on. Fetterman isn’t moving on. He’s watching, and he’s keeping score.
