Confronted by reporters eager for his take on the latest sleaze dragging down his caucus, the Senate Minority Leader did what any self-respecting partisan boss does. He changed the subject. Schumer brushed off questions about Arizona Democrat Ruben Gallego’s sex life, choosing instead to hype his own upcoming rhetorical assault on Donald Trump’s primetime address. “I’m focused on this right now,” Schumer muttered to Fox News Digital, pointing to his anti-Trump notes like a shield.
The distraction tactic is understandable. The details are messy. A New York Post report revealed that Gallego, a man currently whispered about as a 2028 presidential hopeful, slept with at least two Democratic House staffers. Because the aides worked for Texas Democrats rather than Gallego himself, the trysts technically didn’t violate the House’s notoriously loose rules. Sources claim the encounters happened while Gallego was single. Still, the optics are terrible.
Gallego is trying to stonewall. “I’m not going to engage in gossip,” he told reporters. His office went silent when pressed for further comment. But the stench of scandal is hard to wash off in this town, especially when you are already guilty by association. Gallego has been desperately trying to untangle himself from former Representative Eric Swalwell, who resigned in disgrace earlier this year amid a barrage of sexual assault and harassment allegations. Gallego previously admitted his close friendship with Swalwell “clouded my judgment” regarding the rumors that trailed the disgraced ex-lawmaker for years. To manage the fallout, Gallego even hired a former Biden press aide for crisis control.
This isn’t Gallego’s first brush with the ethics police. The Senate Ethics Committee recently dismissed a complaint spearheaded by Representative Anna Paulina Luna, a Florida Republican who accused Gallego of sexual misconduct and campaign finance violations. Gallego claimed vindication, blasting the probe as a right-wing conspiracy. Luna, however, isn’t letting go. Following the latest revelations about the House staffers, she took to social media to twist the knife. “Time to resign,” Luna posted on X. “Glad people are going on record about this creep.”
