This project is a mess. Trump wanted it done by July 4th to kick off the nation’s semiquincentennial. He missed the deadline. He also missed the budget. What started as a boasted $1.5 million quick fix quickly ballooned into a staggering $16 million taxpayer headache.
Trump promised this paint job would last a century. It lasted days. Almost immediately after the June refilling, algae choked the water and the expensive blue coating started peeling off the concrete floor in sheets. The money flowed regardless. Green Water Solutions snagged $1.7 million for a filtration system, while Atlantic Industrial Coatings pocketed $14.7 million for the paint and waterproofing.
Naturally, the finger-pointing started immediately. Trump claims vandals ruined his pool. He asserted, with zero proof, that someone sliced a 350-foot gash into the liner. From the top of the Washington Monument, no such scar is visible, though a tall, dark security fence keeps the public too far away to verify the details.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is sticking to the company line. He told a conservative podcast that the plan is simple: clean the fireworks trash, fix the vandalism, and fill it back up. But the “vandalism” narrative is shaky at best.
Park Police did receive a report of a knife slash on June 9. Since then, prosecutors have gone after David Hearn, a former Olympic canoeist. Hearn pleaded not guilty to damaging the pool. He says he merely picked up a piece of sealant that was already peeling off to inspect the shoddy work. His lawyers call the prosecution a joke, arguing Hearn is a scapegoat for a botched government contract. Three others face similar misdemeanor charges for grabbing loose paint chips. They also pleaded not guilty.
This is just one piece of Trump’s aggressive, expensive campaign to reshape the capital’s aesthetic. He already tore down the White House East Wing for a $400 million ballroom. Next on his list is a massive, towering arch spanning the Potomac. If the Reflecting Pool is any indication, Washingtonians should brace for a very expensive, very gray future.
