He was a force of nature. During his four years in San Francisco, Smith terrorized quarterbacks, helping drag the franchise to three straight NFC Championship games. He later had brief, chaotic stints with the Oakland Raiders and the Dallas Cowboys, ultimately finishing a 75-game career before quietly retiring in 2023.
“We are devastated,” the 49ers said in a statement, pointing to his “undeniable talent” and a rookie season that remains one of the most dominant in league history. They also mentioned his infectious smile. But smiles do not keep the demons away.
In 2011, he was unstoppable. He bagged 14 sacks as a rookie, earning an All-Rookie nod. By year two, he was a Pro Bowler and a first-team All-Pro. He made violence look like art.
