The decisive goal came late in stoppage time from Oliver McBurnie, sealing Hull’s promotion. This marks a dramatic turnaround for Hull, who narrowly avoided relegation to League One just last year on goal difference.
The circumstances surrounding Middlesbrough’s participation in the final were unusual; they had initially lost their semi-final match to Southampton but were reinstated after Southampton’s disqualification for spying on Middlesbrough’s training sessions, a decision Southampton unsuccessfully appealed.
The Championship playoff final is renowned as the most lucrative single soccer match globally, with the victor poised to gain at least $270 million in future earnings.
Both Hull and Middlesbrough had shared a similar journey in the Championship, ascending to the Premier League concurrently in the 2015-16 season and then facing relegation together the following year.
The Wembley clash on Saturday saw a cautious first half with limited scoring opportunities. Hull came closest just before halftime when a header from McBurnie subtly deflected off a Middlesbrough defender, hitting the crossbar.
As the second half unfolded, the game became more open, yet neither goalkeeper was significantly challenged. With the intense heat already taking its toll on the players, extra time and potentially penalties seemed inevitable. However, in the 95th minute, Yu Hirakawa delivered a cross from the left wing. Middlesbrough’s goalkeeper, Sol Brynn, could only parry the ball directly into McBurnie’s path, who capitalize to volley it into the open net from short range. McBurnie’s jubilation was evident as he tore off his shirt in celebration.
For Middlesbrough, this loss extended their unfortunate run at Wembley, marking their sixth defeat in as many appearances at the iconic stadium.
