The meat grinder keeps turning.
In Dnipro, a missile slammed into infrastructure. Six dead. Twenty-nine wounded. Just like that. Down south in Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone found a passenger minibus. It killed three people and injured six, including a child. In the northeastern Sumy region, a 69-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man were killed in their homes by drones. In Kharkiv, a daytime strike took one life and tore into five others. Six other regions reported similar bloodshed. The details are sparse, but the story is always the same.
The lights went out. Again. Eight regions lost power on Monday, crippled by the strikes just as a summer heatwave forced desperate citizens to crank up their air conditioning. Zelenskyy is begging again. He wants Europe to wake up and build real anti-ballistic missile defenses. “People need greater protection,” he pleaded. He wants action, not just sympathy. But Europe moves slow.
But Ukraine is biting back. Cheap, clever drones are flying deep into Russia, hitting oil depots and leaving Russian gas stations dry. Lines are long. People are angry. Even Vladimir Putin had to admit the fuel shortages on Sunday, though he dismissed them as “temporary” hiccups. He will not back down. Kremlin mouthpiece Dmitry Peskov echoed the boss, claiming the front-line push guarantees victory.
The experts do not buy the bravado. The Institute for the Study of War notes that Russia’s actual battlefield performance is slipping as we head into 2026. The Kremlin is bluffing, trying to scare the West into a cheap peace deal. Meanwhile, the sky remains crowded. Russia claimed it shot down 209 Ukrainian drones overnight. Ukraine said it knocked out 82 of 108 Russian drones. The math of war is brutal, and the ledger is written in blood.
