They handed out the hardware on Monday. No surprises here. Georgia catcher Daniel Jackson walked away with the 2026 Golden Spikes Award, proving he was the best amateur baseball player in the country. He earned it.
The junior absolutely tore up the SEC. He took home Player of the Year honors after terrorizing pitchers to the tune of a .396 average, 31 homers, and 86 RBIs in conference play. His full-season slash line read like a video game: .379/.473/.803. But it gets weirder. Jackson swiped 26 bags. That made him only the third player in NCAA Division I history—and the first guy behind the plate—to pair 30-plus home runs with at least 25 steals. Absurd.
His individual brilliance carried the Bulldogs. Georgia marched to a 53-14 record, going 23-7 in the SEC, and swept through the Athens Regional and Super Regional. They made it to Omaha. But the College World Series is a meat grinder, and eventual champion Oklahoma sent them packing.
Jackson follows in the footsteps of Wehiwa Aloy. The former Arkansas shortstop grabbed the trophy last year after hitting .350 with 21 homers for a 50-win Razorbacks squad that also fell short in Omaha. The Baltimore Orioles took Aloy 31st overall in the first round. Pro ball pays better anyway.
The Golden Spikes has been around since 1978. It is a decent predictor of future wealth. Past winners include Bryce Harper, Buster Posey, and Adley Rutschman. Jackson’s name is on the plaque now. Let’s see if his knees hold up in the pros.
