Backflips and Limps: Giants Charity Game Exposes Nabers’ Grim Reality

Sports

Charity softball games are usually boring. Saturday’s Brian Burns event was different. It gave us a stark, depressing look at the New York Giants’ medical ward. Two key players. Two very different recovery tracks. One looked ready for Sunday. The other looked ready for a rocking chair.

Let’s start with Malik Nabers. The wideout is clawing his way back from a nasty 2025 ACL tear. It wasn’t just the ligament; his knee was a total mess. A video captured by Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post showed Nabers chucking dodgeballs. He looked stiff. He looked slow. It was painful to watch. Week 1? Don’t hold your breath.

Head coach John Harbaugh didn’t offer much comfort. He called the rehab a “slog” and a “grind.” No promises were made. Nabers delayed his initial surgery by a month, then went under the knife again in February. That is a recipe for a slow recovery. Expecting him to burn cornerbacks in September is pure fantasy. He is a prime candidate for the Physically Unable to Perform list. That means missing at least four games. It hurts, but rushing him ruins his career.

Then there is Cam Skattebo. The running back is healing from a fractured fibula. Bones heal faster than shredded ligaments. Skattebo proved it. He smashed a home run, then celebrated by pulling off a full backflip before touching home plate. Showoff? Maybe. But it proves his leg is structurally sound. He should be a full go for training camp.

One roster spot looks safe. The other is a giant question mark. Giants fans, brace yourselves. It is going to be a long summer.
