Politicians love a parade. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is no exception. On Tuesday evening, amid the glitter and speeches of Pride Month, Mamdani declared the Big Apple a “haven” for gender-nonconforming residents. He backed up the rhetoric with a promise of $15 million in taxpayer cash. He called it a “first step.”
Where is the money coming from? Nobody knows. The City Council is still haggling over the 2027 budget. Yet, the bill is already written, and local taxpayers are on the hook. Mamdani claims this cash will directly fund gender-affirming care over the next two years. It is a bold move. It also goes further than similar programs in progressive bastions like San Francisco, which mostly stick to funding guidance and case management rather than cutting checks for actual medical procedures.
But look closer. The math does not add up to his campaign hype. On the trail, Mamdani promised a whopping $65 million for gender-affirming care. He pledged $57 million of that to public hospitals and clinics. Now? He is touting less than a quarter of that amount. It is classic bait-and-switch politics.
Still, the mayor insists his commitment is ironclad. He pointed to his first 100 days in office. During that honeymoon phase, he established the city’s first-ever Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs. He wants voters to know they have a champion in City Hall. Whether that champion can deliver on his original price tag remains to be seen.
