Representative Ilhan Omar, a Democratic lawmaker from Minnesota, declined to comment when asked by Fox News Digital about her potential collaboration with the inquiry into Minnesota’s “Feeding Our Future” scandal. Federal prosecutors estimate the scheme defrauded taxpayers of approximately $250 million, and the progressive legislator has been accused of connections to individuals involved. However, when questioned about these alleged links, Omar offered no response.
On Monday, during a confrontation in the halls of Congress, Omar was asked, “Did you ask Minnesota Democrats to block the subpoena for the investigation of Feeding Our Future on the state level?” She remained silent. A subsequent question, “Would you cooperate with that subpoena and provide documents if they request it here in the House Oversight Committee?” also went unanswered.
Following the initial publication, Omar issued a statement to Fox News Digital refuting any misconduct. She stated, “Any claim that I had knowledge of this scheme is flat-out false. The MEALS Act was signed into law by President Trump and passed with bipartisan support as part of a broader legislative package. Trump’s USDA Secretary set the regulatory framework during the rollout of the program. I have always championed feeding kids and will continue to ensure our children do not go hungry.” Omar further elaborated, “The moment this fraud came to light, I immediately sent a letter to the USDA Secretary demanding answers and accountability. As I stated from the beginning, stealing millions of dollars under the guise of feeding hungry children to bankroll lavish lifestyles and extravagant expenses is reprehensible. I’m grateful that Aimee Bock and every individual involved in this abhorrent scheme are being held accountable for defrauding taxpayers and betraying vulnerable children.”
Omar’s MEALS Act, a federal COVID-19 relief measure she sponsored in 2020, is believed to be the link connecting her to the extensive scandal. Numerous Republicans contend that her bill facilitated the fraud by rapidly expanding the USDA’s waiver authority at meal distribution sites.
Despite ongoing concerns, the Minnesota Democrat has consistently bypassed opportunities in recent months to directly address questions or provide information regarding her alleged involvement in the fraud, including documented associations with some of the convicted fraudsters. The Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee had invited her to testify this month and requested documents pertinent to the fraud investigation. Omar missed the deadline to respond, leading to a failed subpoena vote that garnered only five of the six necessary votes after Democrats opposed the Republican-led initiative.
State Representative Kristin Robbins, chair of the House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee, told Fox News Digital in April that Omar “didn’t even respond, ghosted us” when she failed to reply to requests for information. The committee sought communications from Omar—including emails, texts, and meeting notes—demonstrating her promotion of increased access to federal child nutrition programs, specifically with the Minnesota Department of Education and her constituents.
The request also focused on Omar’s public endorsement of a Minneapolis restaurant that later became entangled in the program. Robbins highlighted a Somali-language TV appearance where Omar showcased Safari Restaurant as a meal distribution site and asked for all communications related to the video and the restaurant’s involvement. Additionally, the committee requested records of any contact between Omar and numerous individuals charged or implicated in the Feeding Our Future case, such as nonprofit founder Aimee Bock and dozens of alleged co-conspirators.
Bock, who is currently facing a potential 50-year prison sentence for her part in the scheme, mentioned Omar in a jailhouse interview with the New York Post. Bock stated, “A lot of the sites were working directly with her, being that a lot of the operators were from the same Somali community. There were a lot of people that had been reaching out to her office and staff — and I presume her personally — to work through some of those gaps with the waivers.” Last week, an 84-page report from the Minnesota House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee criticized Governor Tim Walz’s administration, alleging it fostered a “culture of tolerance” that allowed fraudsters to pilfer billions in taxpayer funds.
The report emerged after two dozen hearings and hundreds of whistleblower complaints citing oversight deficiencies and disregarded internal warnings. The estimated scale of the fraud includes $300 million in federal meal program fraud and up to $9 billion in Medicaid fraud, a sum considerably higher than initially believed, according to the committee. The report also implicated Omar’s MEALS Act, suggesting it loosened anti-fraud safeguards in federal nutrition programs, thereby complicating the verification of whether children were genuinely being fed by the Feeding Our Future program.
