James Comey is waiting in line. The former FBI Director cracked that joke after Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche cooked up a “settlement agreement” between Donald Trump and the IRS. The deal handed $1.8 billion in taxpayer cash to targets of “lawfare.” Comey’s dark humor cuts straight to the bone. It highlights exactly why the Senate needs to reject Blanche’s nomination. We are looking at a flagrantly unconstitutional prosecution paired with a corrupt, taxpayer-funded payout to Trump’s inner circle.
Blanche did this to please his boss. That is why Trump wants him to replace Pam Bondi. But that exact eagerness should terrify anyone who believes the Justice Department shouldn’t be the president’s personal law firm.
A federal judge saw right through it. On Monday, she called Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS a total sham. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams ruled the case had no basis in law or fact. It was never a real legal fight. Why? Because the president controlled both sides of the table.
Trump, his sons, and his company claimed an IRS contractor’s leak of their tax returns caused $10 billion in damages. The math was absurd. Worse, Trump waited over two years to sue, blowing past the statute of limitations. The law he used also applies only to federal employees, not outside contractors. The Justice Department usually fights these cases tooth and nail. This time? They rolled over.
It gets worse. A February 2025 executive order banned government lawyers from opposing the president’s positions. Judge Williams noted that this order, combined with the DOJ’s total surrender, proved the entire lawsuit was rigged from day one.
Blanche signed off on this self-dealing anyway. Public outrage eventually forced him to scrap the “Anti-Weaponization Fund” part of the deal. But the rest of the sweetheart agreement stands. Blanche’s order still shields Trump and his family from federal tax liabilities. That little favor could save the Trump clan over $100 million in back taxes and penalties.
While Blanche was busy protecting the president’s wallet, he was also weaponizing the law against Trump’s enemies. He launched a ridiculous criminal case against Comey over a photo of seashells. The shells spelled out “86 47″—a common anti-Trump slogan. Blanche claimed this was a federal felony.
It was obvious political speech. The First Amendment protects it. Yet Blanche spent 11 months investigating a picture of seashells, resulting in an indictment carrying up to 10 years in prison.
This is not justice. It is a vendetta. Blanche has proven he will abuse the courts to punish the president’s critics and abuse the treasury to enrich the president’s family. He is unfit for the job.
