Justice officials dropped the news Monday. They claim Harvard’s foreign cash disclosures “raised concerns” about discrimination against domestic students. No specific programs were named. The feds say they haven’t reached a final verdict yet. Classic government foreplay.
The target? “China-based financial aid programs.” According to the DOJ, Chinese donors have been earmarking cash specifically for students from certain countries. The feds argue this setup might violate civil rights laws by discriminating based on national origin.
“Schools cannot take federal dollars and then turn around and accept money from foreign sources to give financial aid that deliberately excludes American citizens,” warned Harmeet Dhillon, head of the Civil Rights Division. She promised to kill the practice.
Harvard’s response was predictably corporate. They are reviewing the notice. In a written statement, the university insisted it plays by the rules, reports its donations properly, and does not unlawfully discriminate when handing out financial aid.
Beijing chimed in too. Liu Chang, a spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington, called the academic ties mutually beneficial. Liu warned against messing with normal educational exchanges for political theater.
Money talks. Harvard has taken about $630 million from Chinese sources over the decades, part of a massive $4.5 billion haul in total foreign funding. The DOJ pointed to these massive numbers but kept its cards close, refusing to name specific donors.
