Jeffrey Epstein is dead. His secrets are not. Now, House Democrats want to know if the convicted sex offender was moonlighting as an unregistered foreign agent. Representative Jamie Raskin is leading the charge. He is demanding records from the Justice Department, the State Department, and the intelligence community. It is a long shot.
With Republicans running the House, Raskin’s letters will almost certainly end up in the shredder. Nobody expects cooperation. But this is not just about the dead billionaire. It is a warning shot. If Democrats reclaim the House majority next year, they get the gavel. They get subpoena power. This is a trailer for the sequel.
Raskin claims he already has the receipts. Pointing to previously released documents from the Justice Department and the House Oversight Committee, the Maryland Democrat says there is “substantial evidence” Epstein was playing a dangerous game. He allegedly pushed the interests of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. He advised the Kremlin. He even did consulting work for a former Israeli prime minister. He did all of this without ever registering as a foreign agent. That is a massive security risk.
“Our examination of available evidence has already revealed damning indications of Mr. Epstein’s activities on behalf of foreign states,” Raskin wrote. He wants more. Specifically, he is eyeing a mountain of paper. The Justice Department is sitting on roughly 2.5 million unreleased documents related to Epstein. Raskin wants them all. He also wants to know if the DOJ ever bothered to investigate Epstein’s foreign ties while he was alive.
Federal agencies are staying quiet. Requests for comment sent to the DOJ, State Department, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence have so far yielded nothing. They rarely do.
