Hull KR have found their next savior. Or scapegoat. It depends on how the bounce of the ball goes next year. Nathan Cayless is the man stepping into the pressure cooker, signing a three-year deal to take over the reigning Super League champions once this current campaign wraps up.
He replaces Willie Peters. Peters already checked out mentally back in March, announcing his 2026 departure for the shiny new Papua New Guinea Chiefs NRL franchise. Now, the 48-year-old Kiwi gets the keys to the castle.
He has pedigree. Cayless has been cutting his teeth coaching the Parramatta Eels’ NSW Cup side while pulling double duty as the Kiwis’ national assistant. He knows the grind.
Naturally, the corporate speak is already flowing. Cayless babbled on about “philosophies” and “sustained success” after a chat with Hull KR chief Paul Lakin. They clicked. Supposedly. Let’s see how long that mutual admiration society lasts after three straight losses in February.
As a player, Cayless was a beast. One-club man. He played 259 games for Parramatta, captaining them a record 221 times. He also led New Zealand to that famous, bloody-minded World Cup upset over Australia back in 2008. He can lead.
His old boss, Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos, waved him off with the usual polite platitudes, praising his work with the kids. Good luck to him. He’ll need it in East Yorkshire.
