Good pitching beats good hitting. Every single time. On Monday, Berlin Brothersvalley junior Elena Ritchey proved the old cliché right, outlasting Carmichaels’ IUP-bound ace Bailey Barnyak in a tense, bare-knuckle 2-0 shutout to open the PIAA Class 1A playoffs. It was a classic, old-school duel. No room for error.
Ritchey was practically untouchable. She surrendered a measly two hits, hit one batter, and fanned 12. “This feels great,” Ritchey admitted afterward, acknowledging the team’s sluggishness at the plate. They struggled to find their rhythm against Barnyak, but in June, style points do not matter. Survival does.
Berlin (23-2) manufactured its first run in the second inning with pure grit. Senior Elsie Barna singled, swiped second, and moved to third on a base hit by freshman Callie Ritchey. Then came the squeeze. Bena Barna, Elsie’s sophomore sister, dropped a bunt down the third-base line. Carmichaels panicked. An infield throwing error allowed Elsie to slide home. It was ugly. It worked.
Carmichaels threatened once. In the fourth, Ke’Lani Chun singled, moved up on a sacrifice, and reached third on a wild pitch. Ritchey did not blink. She dialed up back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. Crisis averted.
The Mountaineers added some breathing room in the sixth. Elena Ritchey singled with one out, and Elsie Barna—the senior cleanup hitter—swallowed her pride to lay down a perfect sacrifice bunt. Callie Ritchey did the rest, ripping a two-out RBI single to center. That is winning baseball.
Sam Walker chipped in two hits for Berlin. The victory marks only the second state playoff win in the program’s history. Next up is a grudge match against District 10 champion Cambridge Springs, the same team that bounced Berlin 4-2 in the quarterfinals last year. Coach Brian Slope is keeping the message simple: one pitch, one inning, survive and advance.
