Teams will vie for a spot in this year’s state tournament, which is scheduled to return to Cadwell Park from August 5-16. In 2023, the Parkston Rays clinched the Class B amateur baseball championship, overcoming the Hartford/Humbolt Gamecocks with a 10-8 victory in the final. This marked a remarkable debut for the Rays in their third year, as they navigated a challenging five-game run over 11 days, defeating three league champions from the Cornbelt, Pony Hills, and Sunshine leagues, along with two additional Cornbelt rivals. Pitcher Jake Helleloid was instrumental in their success, earning tournament MVP honors with an impressive 8-0 record, a 1.235 ERA, and 129 strikeouts across 79 1/3 innings.
Alexandria, after securing the District 5B title, made a significant run to the state tournament semifinals, where their journey ended against the formidable Parkston Rays. Their path included victories over fellow Sunshine team Parkston Mudcats and Cornbelt foe Canova. An early-season rematch between the Rays and Angels saw Parkston once again emerge victorious with an 11-10 win in 13 innings.
Other Sunshine League representatives in the state tournament included the Parkston Mudcats, Platte, and Winner/Colome. Platte, the 2022 tournament runner-up, advanced to the quarterfinals, while the Mudcats secured a first-round victory. Winner/Colome, regular-season Sunshine champions, surprisingly exited in the opening round against the Dell Rapids Mudcats, breaking a six-year streak of quarterfinal appearances. Corsica, Dimock/Emery, and Mount Vernon did not qualify for the state tournament. Notably, the Mitchell Aces, established in 2024 and integrated into the Sunshine League for the 2025 season, are not fielding a team this year.
The Hartford/Humboldt Gamecocks narrowly missed the state title, falling to the Parkston Rays, which interrupted a four-year dominance by Cornbelt squads. Despite this, the Cornbelt League demonstrated strong representation in the tournament, with three teams reaching the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year and at least one team in the semifinals for the eighth year in a row.
Madison secured the District 4B title, defeating the 2022 state champions, Dell Rapids PBR, but faced an early exit in the state bracket against the eventual champions, the Parkston Rays. PBR, after winning their first-round game, also fell victim to the Rays’ championship charge and is currently 2-0 in their league season. Alongside the Gamecocks, the Dell Rapids Mudcats and Canova also reached the quarterfinals for Cornbelt. The Flandreau Cardinals and Flandreau Blue Teal qualified but were eliminated in the opening round. Salem, Colman, and the Hartford/Humboldt Wood Ducks did not progress past the district tournament. This season, the Baltic River Dawgs, formerly of Class A, have replaced Colman in the league lineup.
Tabor secured their 22nd consecutive state tournament qualification by winning the District 6B tournament for the second year running, though their campaign ended in the second round against the H/H Gamecocks. Freeman also reached the second round, experiencing a memorable 15-10, 10-inning loss to the Dell Rapids Mudcats. The South Central League did not have any teams advance beyond the quarterfinals, with Nebraska-based qualifiers Crofton and Wynot exiting in the first round. Menno, Irene, and Lesterville from the South Central were unable to qualify for the state tournament.
For Kimball/White Lake (KWL), the previous season echoed their 2022 performance: leading the Pony Hills in the regular season, triumphing over Burke in the district tournament, and reaching the state quarterfinals. KWL was ultimately defeated by the Parkston Rays, a team they had beaten during the regular season. Burke, Plankinton, and Wessington Springs all made first-round exits from the state tournament, while Four Corners advanced to the second round before being eliminated. Chamberlain, Colome, and the Winner Demons did not qualify for the state tournament last season.
