The White House lost. Again. A federal judge in California just tossed the Trump administration’s lawsuit against Los Angeles over its sanctuary city policies. The feds hated that LA refused to help them hunt down undocumented immigrants. The court didn’t care.
U.S. District Judge Fernando Olguin didn’t buy the administration’s argument that the city’s rules violate the Constitution. He dismissed the case on Saturday. He did, however, leave the door open for the feds to try again with an amended complaint. Don’t hold your breath.
The White House stayed quiet on Monday. No comments. But Los Angeles City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto was quick to gloat, stating the ruling proves local governments get to decide how to spend their own cash and deploy their own staff. It is a basic civics lesson the feds keep failing.
This legal circus started last June. The Trump administration claimed LA was breaking federal law by banning city resources from aiding immigration raids. The lawsuit dropped right after Trump sent troops to LA during protests. Pure politics.
Judge Olguin saw right through it. He ruled that the city’s policy isn’t trying to run the federal government. It just controls LA’s own employees. It is a pattern. The administration tried the same bullying tactics in Boston and Chicago. They lost there, too.
