Steph Curry wanted LeBron James. Who wouldn’t? But the Golden State superstar is too smart to chase ghosts. He knew the dream of LeBron in a Warriors jersey was always a long shot, even before the King took his talents to Philly on Friday. Now, Curry is left holding the bag. It is going to be a long, brutal season.
Speaking at Moses Moody’s youth camp, Curry didn’t sugarcoat the situation. “That’s why you don’t envision anything until it happens,” he muttered, according to Marcus Thompson of The Athletic. “There’s a lot of moving parts.” That is a massive understatement.
Look at the roster. It is a triage unit. Jimmy Butler is rehabbing a shredded ACL. Moody is recovering from a torn patellar. Kristaps Porzingis is made of glass, and Draymond Green hasn’t even signed a new deal yet. Without LeBron, Curry is staring down a bleak landscape. He knows it.
“The through line, which is hard on anybody in this situation, especially with us keeping this thing together, is knowing that when Jimmy got hurt and Moses got hurt, the whole calculus of everything changes,” Curry admitted. He isn’t crying about it. He is just doing the math. How do they survive the injuries? How do they climb out of the tenth-place gutter they slid into last year?
There are no magic trades on the horizon. No saviors. Just cold, hard rehab. “We don’t live in any alternative universe,” Curry said. Welcome to the real world, Steph. It is going to hurt.
