It started with a knock. A Michigan State Police officer and a child welfare worker stood on his Traverse City porch. The accusation? He was a danger to his own kids. Standard protocol kicked in. Forensic interviews were ordered. Until then, Buttigieg was banned from being alone with his children.
He complied. He had to. In a Substack post, he called the 24-hour nightmare “among the darkest hours of my life.”
The state police eventually cleared him. They confirmed the tip was a total fabrication. The caller’s story was laughably thin: a claim that Buttigieg confessed to violent crimes during a random encounter in Alabama years ago. One problem. Buttigieg has never even set foot in that town.
It was a hit job. Pure and simple. Investigators told him they believed the stunt was politically motivated. No charges will be filed against Buttigieg, and the state found absolutely nothing to back up the claim. But the damage was done.
“I cannot describe the mix of rage and sadness,” Buttigieg wrote. His kids are four. They don’t know left from right. They don’t care about political parties. They just wanted their dad.
Buttigieg is a prime target. He is gay, married, and a rising star in the Democratic party with eyes on 2028. That makes him a lightning rod for the far-right culture war. The timing of the fake report wasn’t accidental. It came right after he posted family photos for Father’s Day.
This is the climate now. Swatting and fake emergency calls have become standard weapons for political extremists. It is dangerous. It wastes police resources. And now, it targets toddlers.
“Everyone knows politics is ugly these days,” Buttigieg wrote. “It’s always been ugly, but now it feels more and more like bloodsport.” He is right. And the arena is getting filthier by the day.
